Pulmonary Embolism: Yaz Side Effect

At one point in time, Yaz was thought to be an effective form of birth control. Unfortunately, many women who have taken Yaz have experienced side effects that are detrimental to their health. Pulmonary embolisms are one of these dangerous side effects. Pulmonary embolisms are blood clots caused by deep vein thrombosis. The blood clots block the coronary arteries and can result in heart attacks and other health ailments. Women who took Yaz are three times more likely to develop blood clots than women who used other types of oral contraceptives.

Why Yaz Users are More At-Risk for Developing Pulmonary Embolisms

The main problem with Yaz is its ingredients. Yaz contains a synthetic form of estrogen that is found in the majority of other birth control pills. It also contains drospirenone, a synthetic progesterone. The problem is the drospirenone.

Drospirenone is an ingredient that is exclusively found in Yaz and its sister drugs. Drospirenone has been found to increase the chances of heart attacks, can cause deadly levels of potassium in the body, embolisms, blood clots and strokes. Deep vein thrombosis develops when a person is inactive for long periods of time. The clot begins in the legs, causing pain and swelling. If the clot breaks from the vein, it can travel to the lungs. While blood clotting is a risk of all types of birth control, studies show that the risk considerably higher with Yaz.

Despite the numerous studies proving the increased health risks associated with Yaz, Bayer Healthcare, the drug’s manufacturer, denies these claims. Bayer maintains that the risks associated with taking Yaz are no greater than those of other oral contraceptives.

The FDA and Yaz Controversy

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration, FDA, formed an advisory committee after numerous lawsuits, conflicting studies and concerns about Yaz. The committee convened to examine the drug and make recommendations as to the future of the drug in the U.S.

The committee decided to keep the drug on the market. However, whistle-blowers exposed the fact that several committee members received some form of compensation from Bayer. The whistle-blowers urged the FDA to form a new, non-biased committee to investigate the drug.

Thousands of women are seeking justice in state and federal courts. Currently, the federal judged heading the case order it into mediation. All lawsuits are on hold awaiting the outcome of the mediation.
